Built in 1848, Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia. Along a coastline later known as the “Shipwreck Coast,” the lighthouse played a vital role in guiding vessels through some of the most dangerous waters in the country. And the Cape Otway Lighthouse park tries to preserve this history.
The Detour That Pays Off
Reaching Cape Otway Lighthouse means leaving the coastal highway and driving through the forest, where, if one is lucky, a koala can be spotted. When my parents and I decided to leave the Great Ocean Road and follow the sign to see the Cape Otway Lighthouse, we had no idea how long it would take to get there, or if it was even worth visiting. But luckily It’s only around a 15 – 20min drive away from the Great Ocean Road.
What the Park Offers
The little park includes not only the lighthouse but also original keeper’s cottages and outbuildings, carefully preserved to show what life was like for those who lived and worked here. There is a small dinosaur bone exhibition and some World War 2 relics, as well as a platform to spot whales (if you’re lucky – we weren’t).
A Quieter Stop Along a Busy Route
While the Great Ocean Road can feel crowded at times, Cape Otway Lighthouse retains a sense of space and tranquillity. Even when other visitors are around, the atmosphere feels calm and reflective. There’s room to wander, sit, and take in the surroundings without feeling stressed. There is even a small cafe within the park.
That sense of quiet is part of what makes the detour so worthwhile.
Why It’s Worth the Extra Time
Cape Otway Lighthouse may no longer be essential for navigation, but its significance hasn’t faded. It offers a deeper connection to the region’s history and a chance to experience the coastline from a different perspective – higher, wilder, and less commercial.
It’s a reminder that some of the best moments on a road trip come when you’re willing to take the road less travelled.
