A Different View of the City
Lisbon has a lot to offer. This beautiful city is famous for its rich history and stunning architecture, has a vibrant nightlife, gorgeous viewpoints, and a variety of delicious food. The gorgeous streets with their colourful tiles and picturesque tram lines, invite visitors to explore every corner. While there’s a ton to do in the city, from wandering through the historic Alfama district to shopping in the busy Baixa area, one experience you should not miss out on is a boat tour on the Tagus River in Lisbon.
Taking to the waters provides a unique perspective of the city that is completely different from anything you could see from land. The expansive views of Lisbon’s skyline, with its red-roofed buildings and iconic landmarks, become even more breathtaking from the river. It’s an amazing way to discover more of the city’s historic side, allowing you to see centuries-old monuments and structures from a new angle. Alternatively, you can choose to dance the night away on the river, with the twinkling city lights as your backdrop, creating an unforgettable experience under the stars.
There are a variety of options when it comes to boat tours in Lisbon, including wonderful sunset cruises that offer a peaceful way to end the day, thrilling sailing adventures for the more adventurous spirits, and lively party boats where you can enjoy music and drinks with friends. Most tours include sights like the Belém Tower, an iconic fortress that once guarded the entrance to the city’s harbor, the Discoveries Monument, a tribute to Portugal’s Age of Exploration, and the 25 de Abril Bridge, often compared to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge due to its striking resemblance.
Whether you’re interested in learning more about Lisbon’s maritime history or simply want to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, a boat tour on the Tagus River is an experience that will add a memorable highlight to your visit. As you glide along the river, you’ll see a side of Lisbon that few get to experience, making it a must-do activity for any traveller.
The Experience
I went on two boat tours with the company Boat Me Up. The first time I went with a bunch of friends. Because it was such a great tour, I decided to take my family when they visited a few weeks later. We loved that they offered a rather smaller and more intimate tour.

With my friends, the vibe was lively and carefree. We boarded just before sunset, and within minutes we were laughing with drinks in hand and were having the best time. As the sky shifted from soft gold to deep pink, the whole city seemed to glow. We spent the evening drinking, taking photos, and being in awe of the gorgeous views around us. It felt like the perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation.
When my family came to visit, the tour was calmer, more focused on soaking in the views and learning about Lisbon from the water. Our skipper shared bits of history as we passed Belém Tower and the Discoveries Monument, adding context that made the city feel even more layered and alive. My family – who had never been to Portugal before – loved seeing Lisbon from this angle. Even the most familiar spots looked fresh and magical from the river.
Lisbon is already a beautiful city, but seeing it from the water, as the sun slowly sets beats everything. Whether you’re celebrating something special, showing visitors around, or simply treating yourself to a relaxing afternoon, sailing on the Tagus is worth every second.
