Melbourne, The City of Coffee And Brunch
There are so many reasons to like Melbourne. If it isn’t the cultural diversity, the many (free) events or the lively nightlife, it is the coffee that will convince you of the greatness of this city. And Melbourne not only does coffee great but also brunch. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of cafes and brunch spots all over this beautiful city. And while many of them are great, there are a few that are just an experience in themselves. So if you’re looking for a brunch beyond eggs Benedict, these are the best brunch spots in Melbourne.
Old Man Drew
If I had to describe this place in one sentence, I would call it a brunch spot made for garden fairies. The decor inside this place is stunning and so whimsical (and we all need more whimsy in our lives, let’s be real). From the outside, you wouldn’t know how large Old Man Drew really is. Once you’re inside this place just keeps on going and going. It’s a fantastic place for any celebration with the girls (we were literally surrounded by birthdays).
Their food menu has a bunch of different food options, from a Greek breakfast to an English big breakfast to a variety of eggs Benedict. But the highlight at this place is definitely the atmosphere and the stunning decor (there was even a whole truck in the outdoor area).
Brighton Beach House
If you are more of a beach fairy than a garden fairy, this place is for you. Located right next to the famous colourful Brighton Beachhouses, the Brighton Beach House (similar name, different thing) is the perfect place to grab brunch with a view. Especially the outdoor tables offer a stunning view of the ocean and the beach. During the weekend, this place is usually buzzing, and lots of people just sit on the stairs enjoying the sun.
Long story short: if you’re looking for the perfect beach side brunch, this is the place.
O3 Brunswick (The Ghibli Cafe)
Have you ever dreamed of immersing yourself in a Ghibli studio film? Because at O3 Brunswick, you can make that dream come true. This is an incredible location with so many heartfelt details. To enter the cafe, you have to walk through a train (yes, a literal train). It technically is a study cafe, so you need to download an app to get access (you get 3 hours for free at the beginning). Once you’ve scanned in and walked through the barriers to will find this gorgeous cafe, which even has a plane mounted to the ceiling! There are tons of books and lights and cosy corners, which all help make this an experince rather than a regular brunch.
Lunar by Hikari
As much as I love a normal brunch with eggs and bacon, I do love to experience some more untraditional brunch spots. When I moved to Melbourne, I discovered the concept of asian brunches, and it has changed my life.
Lunar by Hikari is such a popular spot that there is usually a waitlist to get it. They do brunch meals (like the chicken curry I had with some sides), but also offer smaller treats like onigiris. Also, their coffee is outstanding (they even do specialty coffee drinks – I haven’t tried any here yet, but in this blog post, I show you some other great specialty coffee drinks).
Kombu
When I say I have discovered asian brunch spots – I mean I have discovered asian brunch spots. Kombu is probably one of my favourite unique brunch spots on this list when it comes to the food. They do this Japanese brunch meal with 6 sides, your side of protein, rice and soup. It’s almost a tasting experience if you’d like. They also do really fun matchas or coffees. If you’re bored with your standard eggs Benedict, give this spot a try – it will definitely surprise you.
