Australia

About the Destination

Australia, “Down Under”, has been a travel goal of mine since I was little. I’ve always been fascinated by the land of beautiful beaches, kangaroos and koalas (not koala “bears”, I have been told). And in 2022, I was able to visit the country for the first time.

I travelled in a mix between group travel and solo travel along the Australian east coast. Soaking up every experience for the one month I was there, not knowing that two years later I would make Australia my more long-term home. I spent my first year in Australia working in hospitality and retail jobs, experiencing that true backpacker lifestyle (including living in a hostel for months). After completing my 88 days (aka the visa days you have to do to extend your stay in Australia), I decided to move to Melbourne, get an office job and a more stable lifestyle.

My Two Favourite Things About Australia

1. Nature

This is a no-brainer. Australia is famous for its beautiful scenery, beaches and reefs. During my time in Australia, I got to enjoy the view from the air (while skydiving), on the ground (while seeing wild Kangaroos in Noosa) and underwater (while scuba diving through the Great Barrier Reef).

2. The People

Being from Europe I never really got the chance to meet many Australians. I didn’t really know what to expect. So when I arrived in Melbourne (my first stop in Australia) I noticed two things about Australians:

  • Moustaches and mullets are everywhere (like everywhere)
  • Australians are HILARIOUS (I have what it is about them, but they made me laugh so much)
